The primary ranch summer activity is horseback riding.  Multiple rides are available from the ranch and they are based upon ride duration.  Horseback rides are available in 1 hour, 1-1/2 hour, 2 hour, and half day increments.  Except for the short ride to the national forest property line, the rides take place in the national forest service primitive area located to the north of the ranch.  The views that are available during any of these rides definitely warrant taking a camera along to capture them.

Other summer ranch activities available include:

  • Trout fishing in the pond—catch and release only.
  • Ping-pong at the lodge.
  • Campfire rings are available for nightly use.
  • Horseshoes.
  • Volleyball.

RANCH ACTIVITIES

Steamboat Lake State Park is located directly across the road from the ranch.  The lake has good trout fishing, a full service marina, and miles of trails surrounding it.  The marina has boats for rental ranging from small fishing boats to large pontoon boats equipped with grills.  Walking onto any of the state park facilities is free.  However, driving onto them will require the purchase of a temporary or seasonal state park pass.  The Steamboat Lake State Park visitors center is worth a visit (located 2 miles from the ranch).  There is no charge for driving to the visitors center.  It has an interactive display on area history, local flora and fauna, trail maps, and is a good source of information on the area.  There are two other small lakes in the vicinity if one wishes to get away from the main stream.  Hahn’s Peak Lake is located to the north of the ranch and Pearl Lake is located to the south.  Both of these lakes are part of the state park system.

The surrounding national forest land offers multiple hiking, mountain biking, and four wheel drive trails for one to explore.

Historic Hahn’s Peak and Hahn’s Peak Village are close the ranch.   Both are rich in old-west history.  The village was created after gold was discovered at Hahn’s Peak.  The Village was the county seat until the gold ran out.  Butch Cassidy spent a short stint in the Village’s original “bear trap” jail cell.  This jail is still at the village and is one of the many old-west and mining artifacts to observe and enjoy at the Village.  The citizens of Hahn’s Peak Village have done a great job of preserving their heritage and are willing to share it with visitors.  The Hahns Peak Area Historical Society operates a museum during the summer months.
